Mom's home

Before I forget, the song gracing my ears is from Mercscilla. Cheerio, girl.

Been disconnected lately, more than usual, I think. Outside forces. RL intruding. Worry, founded or otherwise. I think I can feel depression rearing its ugly head but like the idiot trooper that I am, I won't do anything about it.

My mom has been released from the hospital for a few days already. Crazy, huh? Less than a week after they cracked her chest open, they told her, stand and be on your way. You're healed. Pffft. Hardly. They need the bed. They don't care that she lives alone and, while they tell her she needs to rest and shouldn't be doing anything, by sending her home they're forcing her to ignore their 'orders'. I don't think that the ten thousand miles separating me from my homeland has ever felt that heavy.

Apologies to everyone I left hanging without news about my mom. She's doing well. Had a chat with her on IM this morning. She's in good spirit despite the pain and the shortness of breath. Has even risked a walk outside a couple of times when her cousin stopped by.

Alright, better get back to that graphic work I'm doing for OSA...

Another update

And it's already twelve hours old. Sorry about the delay, guys.

Last I heard (that was around midday, my time), the bleeding had stopped and my mom had woken up. The nurse told my brother that she was lucid and in good spirits and they even managed to get the breathing tube out. No one has seen her yet though and I can't call her while she's in the ICU (next 3 days). Both my brothers are planning to go see her later today (their time). I'll know more after that.

Thank you for your support.

Update

My mom got out of surgery nearly two hours ago. All went fine, according to one of the OR nurses. Though some bleeding is always expected afterwards, there's a little more than they'd like. So they're working on that. I'll know more in a few hours. She's still under.

Fingers crossed.

It's happening...

Got a phone call from my mom a little less than an hour ago. (it's middle of the night here) I was hoping I could just shrug it, turn over and go back to sleep but...

The hospital called her today and she's going in in an hour, surgery to be taking place tomorrow. I'm a nervous wreck. Ten thousand miles away and I can't do a thing about it.

Mom, I really hope all will go well.

Slither

Don't get me wrong. I'm a big fan of Mal. I miss Firefly and I wish there was a sequel to Serenity in the works. So when a good friend of mine showed up a couple of Saturdays ago and produced a DVD out of her pocket, saying, hey, this has got Fillion and Rooker in it, I thought, what the hell. Let's put it on.

And I bring you...

Nathan Fillion as Bill Pardy

Nathan Fillion and Gregg Henry

CHUD gave it the thumbs up, she said. And so we sat down, looking forward to good entertainment. Oh, we got entertainment alright...

This review out of some Cracker Jack box is so misleading, it ain't funny. The claim that this movie is in the same league as Shaun of the Dead is ridiculous.

Don't let yourselves be fooled; it is so NOT like Shaun of the Dead. You cannot compare the two. The really nasty alien slugs? They look like the tongues from the Strongbow ads... (or is it some beer ad?) Anyway, you get the gist. There goes the scary factor right there. Both films find the comedy not in the monsters (both films play those elements completely straight)? What planet is he on? The Slither 'monster' was never, ever played straight; it was a farce like bad makeup right from the start. I mean had I known going in that it needed to be taken like a bad copy attempt of Army of Darkness (in terms of goofiness and campness), I probably would have appreciated it a bit more but... oh boy. While Shaun of the Dead mastered the genre; Slither didn't. Where that remake of Romero's Dawn of the Dead did too; Slither didn't. No matter how you look at it.

Despite the references to the classics, the good cast and Nathan Fillion's participation, it remains a wtf moment.

It's like watching a trainwreck. You can't turn away. I'll give 'em that. You just got to get to the end because you can't believe anyone would have signed on a project like that if it doesn't get somewhat better at some point. But it doesn't. Just more ridiculous and yeah at some point you just got to laugh...

I must admit that the extras salvaged that wreck of a movie for me a little. Who is Bill Pardy? is certainly worth watching if you have any brain matter left at the end of the ordeal.

Bill Pardy: My easy-going nature is gettin' sorely fuckin' tested.

Mine too, buddy. Mine too.

fic recs

Through a Glass Darkly by sdraevn (Stargate Atlantis - R)

Came across this one this week and I cannot recommend it enough. Spoilers for Common Ground.

Passionfruit by Cincoflex (ST:Enterprise - NC-17)

Revisited this one after four year. Still as good and funny (and smutty) as the first time around.
